Being Green is Cool! If you've read our history, you know that when Portland Store Fixtures got its start, the girls were on a bit of a tight budget, as are many small businesses in the early years. They made it, in part, by being what Penney calls, Independently Frugal. What does that have to do with being green? Many of their early practices are the same ones that helped them win the Portland Recycle Works (formerly BlueWorks) Award. That's right, being green makes good financial sense, as well as good ecological sense: Being Green is Frugal!
For example, waste management costs money. The more waste you divert (through recycling or reuse), the less you have to pay to throw away. Buying old letterhead and envelopes from local organizations like SCRAP (one of our favorites!), not only saves trees but it saves dollars. Even in the old days, gas cost money and the less of it you used, the less you had to pay for, so combining trips, carpooling, biking, and walking as much as possible has always made sense. Now, when gas prices are astronomical and our sources for petroleum are running out, it's silly and wasteful not to be smart about how you use your car.
So Why Aren't You Being Green? In a recent article, Newsweek states, "Any company with a supply chain and global operations must either reduce its oil consumption, and so it's carbon footprint, or rapidly see its profits eaten up by fuel bill." We're not necessarily a global operation but we have a supply chain and our costs have gone up rapidly this year and are still rising. If being green can not only help to offset profit loss but help our struggling ecology, what excuse do we have to not do all that we can?
