What's in a Savvy Store blog, you ask?  You'll find business tips, recycling and reuse ideas, creative store fixture use, community events, store design, and much more.  We post our blog once a week(ish) and try to mix helpful with a dash of amusement.  Enjoy!

Summer School Success!

A huge thank you to everyone who answered our call to donate to PDX Summer School! With your help, we were able to raise $465, which we then matched for a total of $930.

In case you haven’t heard, PDX Summer School is a program to tutor low-income English Language Learner students in SE Portland.

Support Your Community

We all know that the more money you spend within your community the more money stays within your community. But what about stuff? What should you do with your left over stuff? Maybe it's stuff that you don't think it useful at all – like bottle tops or piles of paper or yarn scraps. Or maybe it's stuff that would definitely be useful to someone – like a couch or a toaster or a box full of crayons – but you don't know what to do with it. So in order to ease the confusion (which is one of our favorite things), we've come up with a list of Portland area organizations to which you can take things that you might not need.

Wanna Paint a Picture?

Have you noticed the murals on the 2nd Avenue side of our building? If you haven't, you really should take a look because they are really awesome. We decided that, in an effort to make the Southeast Industrial area prettier, we needed to get a mural. So the first thing we did was contact the Regional Arts and Culture Council's Public Art Murals program. The murals program provides grants for public art. They have several deadlines throughout the year and, if you follow their instructions well, you might just get some money toward making your neighborhood more beautiful.

If We Don't Have It, We Know Who Does

In our store, we can't seem to carry everything. Try though we might, there is really only so much space. So we have a handful of other businesses that we use (and recommend) when we don't have that perfect thing for which you seek.

Sponsor a Teacher

title=In the fall of 2007, a friend of Portland Store Fixtures started as a teacher at a Portland area school in a lower income community. This school's teachers are passionate and eager, and the parents offer as much support as they can while providing for their families. But more often than not, the financial support from the PTA isn't enough to supply a classroom full of students with enough materials to give them the best education possible.
